The launch of the Journal of Foundational Medical Research (JFMR) on August 17, 2025, marks a major milestone in global biomedical publishing.

It establishes a dynamic platform that bridges foundational science with clinical innovation, advancing medical research collaboration worldwide. It marks the beginning of a new era in which the sciences of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, and laboratory medicine are acknowledged as the real bedrock upon which all modern clinical medicine is built, in addition to a renewed dedication to the fundamental medical sciences. The JFMR is a logical continuation of the commitment and activism of the National Master of Science (M.Sc.). The Medical Teachers’ Association (NMMTA) has been a driving force for reform since its founding in 2013. The growing recognition that a robust scientific infrastructure is just as important to the future of medicine in India and around the world as clinical excellence is exemplified by this combined movement of scientific renewal and professional justice.

Understanding the development, potential, and ongoing difficulties of India’s foundational sciences is necessary to appreciate the significance of JFMR. The Mudaliar Committee suggested expanding M.Sc. and Doctor in Philosophy (Ph.D.) studies in non-clinical subjects in the 1960s and 1970s due to the severe clinical faculty shortage the nation was experiencing. Devoted educators, who frequently received less attention than their clinical counterparts, stepped up to the challenge, influencing future generations of physicians, advancing laboratory medicine research, and maintaining strict academic standards. But even after decades of vital work, these scientists and teachers struggled with unequal chances for professional development and regulatory discrepancies. To address these systemic inequalities, NMMTA was established in 2013 with a strong commitment to equity, professional development, and scientific innovation.

However, advocacy is insufficient on its own. A space for knowledge creation, sharing, and celebration—the kind of academic dialogue that propels advancement in any field—is necessary for the foundational sciences to truly flourish. This urgent need is addressed by the establishment of JFMR. Supported by the NMMTA and a community of researchers, educators, and policy advocates, the journal provides a peer-reviewed, open-access platform for the entire range of fundamental medical research. Ideas are discussed, discoveries are documented, and both innovation and tradition are respected here. Most importantly, JFMR intentionally bridges the gaps between academic teaching, clinical understanding, and bench research, acknowledging that these boundaries are more historical than fundamental.

So, what is the actual reach and goal of JFMR? Fundamentally, the journal accepts the broadest variety of academic contributions, including hypothesis-driven experimental studies, literature syntheses, case series, groundbreaking case reports, and sharp letters that question received knowledge and spark new discussions. However, JFMR stands out for its specific and purposeful emphasis on several foundational areas.

The journal’s core topics are laboratory medicine, pharmacology, microbiology, physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry. Original research papers in this area may describe novel discoveries in neuroanatomy, enzyme regulatory mechanisms, cell signaling pathways, or pharmaceutical interventions. While case studies record uncommon and illuminating phenomena at the intersection of science and practice, review articles summarize developing topics like molecular histopathology, integrative physiology, or current trends in medical microbiology.

JFMR rejects the idea that basic science is static or compartmentalized. The journal actively seeks work that bridges its core disciplines with emerging convergences— translational research that applies molecular discoveries to diagnostic, prognostic, or therapeutic domains; studies that use systems biology, bioinformatics, or computational modelling to decipher complexity; or cooperative studies that connect, for instance, cellular biology and regenerative therapeutics or immunology and metabolic disease.

JFMR’s dedication to the nexus of educational innovation and foundational science is among its most progressive stances. Research and analysis on curriculum design, competency-based medical education, novel assessment techniques, digital learning modalities, and simulation-based instruction are all included in the journal. By doing this, it not only mirrors but also influences the course of medical curriculum reforms in India and around the world, promoting a paradigm in which the development of basic sciences is essential to the development of clinical skills throughout one’s life.

JFMR makes room for research on laboratory automation, the creation of diagnostic algorithms, molecular diagnostic platforms, quality assurance, novel teaching labs, and evidence-based laboratory procedures as laboratory medicine becomes more significant in clinical and public health settings. In these fields, case-based debates, position papers, and practical advice serve to emphasize further the immediate clinical and societal implications of fundamental research.

The journal is dedicated to studies that establish connections between findings from laboratory bench research and population health outcomes, including epidemiological studies with solid biochemical or pathophysiological foundations, endemic disease investigations, studies on nutritional status and metabolic health, and work that focuses on environmental determinants of disease. Contributions from marginalized or resource-constrained environments are particularly welcomed, guaranteeing that advancement is truly inclusive in both scope and purpose.

JFMR welcomes discussion and investigation on biomedical science ethics, the effects of new technologies, regulatory innovation, professional burnout, and well-being among researchers and educators because it acknowledges that contemporary scientific work takes place in a social and policy framework. The basic sciences are sensitive to the values and requirements of the broader community because of this multidisciplinary energy.

JFMR establishes a living archive and catalyst across these intricately entwined domains, serving as a home for both in-depth research and targeted, field-defining insight. Being open-access is a conscious and important decision that supports the journal’s role as a catalyst for discipline-wide change in addition to democratizing knowledge.

The concept of the publication is equally centered on the dedication to internationalism and transdisciplinary interchange. Today’s research has few limits since global, multifaceted issues, including diabetes, cancer, microbial resistance, pandemics, and neurodegenerative diseases, all require cooperative answers. To maintain the foundational sciences as a shared business, JFMR specifically encourages submissions from partners worldwide as well as those in low- and middle-income environments.

The editorial board assumes its first responsibility with a deep regard for the pioneers-India’s groundbreaking founding scientists and the NMMTA leaders who defended their rights and reputations. These days, JFMR is more than just a journal; it is an invitation, a movement, and a commitment. It gives practitioners, students, early-career researchers, and seasoned faculty members a chance to influence, promote, and celebrate the fundamental sciences.

The journal invites anyone who wants to fill in gaps or create something new to submit original research, reviews, case series, reports, and letters. Fairness, constructive criticism, scientific rigor, and quick turnaround are the cornerstones of our editorial leadership, which ensures that fresh information is effectively and extensively disseminated around the world.

In conclusion, the Journal of Foundational Medical Research’s launch is a clear call to action as India and the rest of the world stand at the nexus of tradition and medical transformation: to reaffirm the importance of science in all facets of healthcare, to value the work of educators and researchers who serve as the foundation for every physician’s career, and to make sure that the next clinical discovery, the next generation of practitioners, and the future of healthcare are all grounded in the most solid scientific foundation.

Let this journal serve as the foundational science’s voice, platform, and repository. Let it inspire, challenge, and bring people together. Above all, may JFMR serve as a reminder that our dedication to the foundations of medicine is where the real advancements in the field—and the hope we provide for our societies—begin.

Submit your original research, reviews, case reports, letters, innovations, and reflections to JFMR—where foundational science has a home, a stage, and a voice.
